The breathtaking vistas of Arches National Park were around every bend as we approached the Ramada Inn in Moab. Our group’s first day in the trenches was spent with an early curtain call to visit Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park with mentor Daniel Cox. As the group meandered about, Dave provided some great suggestions both at the arch and the Green River outlook.
Day Three we awoke to the stirring sounds of nature as we ventured out to capture Landscape Arch in the early morning light with mentor Layne Kennedy. After getting some great landscape shots there, we headed back to the hotel to rest up for the evening hike to Delicate Arch, which was well worth the steep trek up the rock incline. It was amazing to see the large group that had gathered at the top awaiting the sunset, all armed with cameras.
Day Four we caught a break and heading out in late morning to the Petrified San Dunes with mentor Dave Black. We even had an unscheduled stop to see some Indian petroglyphs, which was really cool. Later that evening the two Daves (Black and Tejada) captivated the group with a light painting session at Balanced Rock. The entire session took a great deal of coordination and everything went off without a hitch as we all got some great pictures.
Day Five we had another early morning as we headed out to capture North Window/Turrent Arch in the golden light of dawn with mentor Layne Kennedy. In the afternoon we got the opportunity to photograph some models from Rim Tours mountain biking on Slick Rock while we practiced our off camera flash skills. The evening was capped off with a group slideshow where we got a chance to see the true talent of all those that attended the trek.
There was time allotted for the mentors to critique our work, and they provided some great feedback to help us improve our photos. Thanks to all the folks who organized the trek (Erica, Vanessa and Michelle) as well as our great group of mentors: Dave Black, Dave Tejada, Layne Kennedy and Dan Brown.
