Upcoming Treks

Banff National Park, Canada

February 21 - 26, 2012

Join the Mentor Series as we venture boldly into the Canadian Rockies, home to some of the most photogenic landscapes on earth, from glimmering glaciers and luminous lakes to crystalline cliffs and proud peaks. With Nikon professional photographers Daniel J. Cox and Layne Kennedy at your side, you will learn how to sharpen your skills and walk away with images as breathtaking as the snowcapped surroundings.

Banff National Park is the third oldest national park in the world and certainly one of the most magnificent. We begin at sunrise on Lake Louise, Canada’s “Diamond in the Wilderness.” Let your lens take in the artistry of the sun’s rays as they paint the glassy surface of the water with radiant hues. Continue taking advantage of the morning light as we move into view of Victoria Glacier, a towering presence at the head of the lake.

To reach the top of Sulphur Mountain, we will travel in a gondola cabin up the 2,292- foot climb.  Keep you camera in hand as the ride offers increasingly spectacular viewpoints. Once at the summit, you will be afforded a panoramic vista that most photographers only dream of. Later, as the sun sinks low in the evening sky, be poised to capture some of Banff’s most majestic sights along the Mount Norquay Scenic Drive, including Mount Rundle, Bow Valley and the park’s varied wildlife.

In the golden hour of the morning, take in the majestic sights found along the Vermillion Lakes Scenic Drive. Seize the opportunity of the winter season to document some of nature’s delicate details, from the frosty morning mist hovering over reflecting pools to the feathery patterns in the ice—especially when we journey under the frozen ceiling of the Maligne River and are transported to a wondrous realm of ice formations.

Craft portraits of this theatrical season at Johnston Canyon, where you will encounter waterfalls frozen in time and giant icicles suspended from cliff faces in uniquely dramatic poses.
A ride along picturesque Tunnel Mountain Scenic Drive will lead us to Surprise Corner and Hoodoos Viewpoint, both of which boast remarkably gorgeous geological sights.

Let this trek filled with snow and ice ignite a new fire in your portfolio. The natural splendor of the Canadian Rockies awaits—sign up today!

A Note from Mentor

The Canadian Rockies are one of my favorite places in all of North America. I'm getting tingles just writing this. I've never been to the Banff area in the winter so this will be a new experience for me at that time of year. However, I have spent many days exploring this same region during the Spring, Summer and Fall. Banff is in the heart of the most spectacular mountains the Rockies have to offer. Granite spires just 10,000-12,000 feet towards skies of magical blue. It will be a great place for using a Polarizer. You will also want to make sure you have a wide angle lens, a tripod, mid range lenses as well as a telephoto at least 200mm in length. There are definite possibilities for seeing animals such as elk and big horn sheep so the telephoto could be very handy. Landscapes will be our primary goal and from prior experience there will no shortage of incredible opportunities on that front. Daniel J. Cox
