Upcoming Treks

Maryland

June 08 - 10, 2012

Pristine coastline and crystalline water scenery await in Annapolis, Maryland, a great American city poised on the lapping shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Prepare to capture the coast and all the surprises it has to offer: colonial architecture at its best, abundant wildlife and unspoiled preserves. With Nikon professional photographers Mark Alberhasky and Corey Rich at your side, you will discover in-depth techniques, whether your lens is turned toward a passing schooner or waterfowl sailing the open sky. This is an experience you don’t want to miss!

Your trek through this sailing capital wouldn’t be complete without a ride at sea. Glide through the heart of the bay as your ship’s sails fill with wind. Shooting on the open sea presents challenges that your mentors will help you overcome, whether it’s framing seaworthy silhouettes against the downtown skyline or snapping shot after shot of the graceful vessels racing by.

Much more is in store ashore, as you travel the cobblestone streets of one of the nation’s earliest cities. Annapolis is alive with history. Fix your camera on the red brick Georgian mansions that dot the historic district, or turn your eye to the horse-drawn carriages that still clop along the thoroughfare. Detail matters here, and your mentors will teach you how to compose focused images that tell the capital’s story.

At Sandy Point State Park, broaden your view and take panoramic images of the Bay Bridge. The sunset gives you a chance to hone your skills with shadow and light, whether you are taking pictures of the massive span of steel and wire across the watery expanse or the outline of a fisherman at the shore casting his line. Don’t miss the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, one of only ten such structures listed as a National Historic Landmark. The hexagonal beacon hovers over the water on cast-iron pillars like a crab over the sand. Any angle you take will speak volumes of Annapolis’s deep maritime history.

The natural landscape at the Eastern Neck Wildlife Refuge will give your portfolio dimension. Foot trails and boardwalks lead to native wildflowers and butterflies. Have your camera ready to capture the rare site of a skulk of red foxes or a bald eagle gliding over the Eastern Shore.

If you are looking for a place to expand your knowledge of photography and hone your skills, look no further than the Mentor Series trek to Annapolis!

A Note from Mentor

Hi Maryland trekkers! This June we'll be exploring a wide variety of great photo ops in and around Annapolis and Chesapeake Bay. As you read in the itinerary highlights, there will be seascapes, landscapes, architecture, and wildlife opportunities all squeezed into our three day trek. This means you should at least have focal lengths covering 28mm to 200mm, and while longer or wider isn't mandatory it could come in handy. I'm loving my NIkon 28-300 because the focal range from a single lens is wonderful on either DX of FX bodies. There could even be macro subject matter along the way! Since we're visiting a coastal town in summer, there is always the potential for precipitation, so do include a rain shell when you pack. We never let the elements keep us from great pictures (in fact they often make the pictures great!). While tripods are not a must, a good lightweight travel tripod does give you razor sharp results. Most trekkers will bring laptops loaded with photo processing software of their choice. Bring software you are familiar with so you can manage all the images you'll be making and participate in the valuable image review sessions. A second battery? Highly recommended, and don't forget charger and card reader if you use one. I'm always happy to field any photo or gear questions prior to the trek. Just drop me an email. mark@imagema.com See you this summer in Maryland! Mark Alberhasky
