Pack your camera gear, Speedlights and join the Mentor Series as we trek to the Southwest to light up Tucson, Arizona, in the spring. This sun-splashed locale will provide the perfect backdrop in which to learn the rewards of using light to create an intentional effect in your photos, as well as capture the beauty and history of this desert location. Allow Nikon professional photographers and illumination gurus David Tejada, Lucas Gilman and Dave Black to simplify techniques and help you address lighting scenarios that will convey a desired atmosphere, while capturing unique images in both controlled and spontaneous shooting situations.
Light is the essence of any photograph, and it is important to understand how to control your light and to explore which lighting is best suited to subject and scene. Take your passion for photography to the next level on this trek by practicing the Mentor Series hands-on approach and walking away with in-depth knowledge of your Speedlights and how they can work for you.
Start your visit to the Arizona Sun Corridor at a working Longhorn cattle ranch located in the foothills of the copper-colored Tucson Mountains. You will learn the concept of lighting “on location” and have an opportunity to direct hired models and practice using off-camera flash. Your mentors will assist you in assessing a particular shooting situation and finding the best angles. You will learn to interpret any existing light source and understand how to use your Speedlight (or more than one) to render the best image.
Speedlight technology will continue to be our focus as we walk the streets of Old Tucson Studios, the set of more than 300 movies since 1939. With gunfighters, stagecoach drivers and saloon girls as our subjects, this old Western town is an authentic setting for our continuing exploration of how luminosity can shape the mood and color of the photographs you create.
Further develop your skills at the area’s missions as you consider the ambient light and learn to frame the Spanish architecture underneath a blazing blue sky.
End the day at Saguaro National Park where you will discover that Speedlights are not just for portraiture. Watch the wildflowers unfurl, granting vivid contrast against the dry desert floor, and the saguaro cacti are always ready for a close-up.
You can’t miss with mentors Dave Black, Lucas Gilman and David Tejada—industry leaders when it comes to using Speedlights in their stylized images. During this trek to the Wild West, you will bring to light the best in your photography and round up images to treasure for years to come. Sign up now!
Howdy to all the Trekkers who will be attending the Speedlight Flash Master Class in Tucson. This is going to be a great time of learning how to accomplish advanced location lighting using Speedlights in a variety of settings. Be sure to bring your Speedlights and any accessories that allow you to use your flash off camera. A 24-70mm lens or similar length would be a good choice, but I would encourage you to bring other lenses you might own, and a sturdy tripod is always a good idea. As the course title reads, this is a Master Class so brush up and be familiar with using your flash off camera so we can easily move on to advanced location lighting. Lucas, David, and I are looking forward to working with all of you in Tucson. Adios. Dave Black
